5 simple hacks that made my trip to Greece a breeze
I’ve been in love with traveling to Greece ever since my first visit back there, in 2015. From the stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters to the rich culture and mouthwatering food, it quickly became my go-to summer destination. And after returning year after year for nearly a decade, I’ve learned some valuable tips and tricks that have made each trip easier and more enjoyable.
So here are my top 5 things to have in mind before traveling to Greece:
1. 🩺 Get travel insurance, just in case
Bad luck doesn’t take vacations and it often strikes when you least expect it. That’s why having valid medical insurance is essential before traveling to Greece (and basically any other country).
Whether it’s a mild cold, a minor injury, or even a severe sunburn (trust me, it happens more often than you think and can send you straight to the Emergency room), it’s best to be prepared. And if you’re traveling with kids, this becomes even more important. Peace of mind is priceless when you’re far from home.
2. 💸 Prepare for cash payments
I usually prefer using a card for payments, it’s quick, easy and keeps things organized. But when I travel abroad, I always make sure to carry a decent amount of cash in the local currency (in Greece’s case, that’s Euros).
While cards are widely accepted in cities and popular tourist areas, many beach bars and family-run tavernas still prefer cash. Having Euros on hand saves time and stress and can be a lifesaver when you can’t find an ATM.
3. 🧳 Pack light, but smart
I like to think of myself as a professional packer 😅 Somehow, I always manage to fit everything I need into my luggage and my friends and family are always impressed by how efficient I’ve become at mastering this skill.
That said, no matter how well I pack before leaving, I (almost) always run into the same issue when it’s time to return: no space for souvenirs. Greece is full of irresistible local products, from handmade goods to delicious treats, olive oil and natural soaps… and this makes the packing activity for return more challenging.
So here’s my advice: pack light and smart. Bring only what you truly need: 2–3 versatile t-shirts or dresses can easily get you through most of the trip, you don’t need to move your entire wardrobe from one country to another. Leave a little space for the memories you’ll want to bring back with you.
4. 🛜 Stay connected without roaming fees
Whether you want to navigate Google Maps in Athens or post your sunset photos from Zakynthos, staying online is key.
Before your trip, consider a mobile data solution that works across Europe without outrageous roaming charges. It’ll save you both money and frustration.
Here’s my suggestion for a data-only eSIM from MobileSIM that will make your trip to Greece feel like a breeze: Fixed data plan starting from $5 or Unlimited to give you freedom in 42 European countries.
5. 🍹Expect a relaxed pace and embrace it
In Greece, time moves differently. Shops may close for afternoon siestas, meals are long and leisurely and buses don’t exactly run like Swiss watches. Instead of fighting it, go with the flow.
Think of the ancient Greek philosophers, spending hours in the Agora, discussing life’s greatest mysteries without ever checking the time. It’s a way of living that reminds us there’s no need to rush. The slower pace is part of Greece’s charm and a gentle invitation to be fully present, savor the moment and enjoy life as it comes.
