Best time to visit Zanzibar: Weather, seasons and travel tips

Dreaming of a well-deserved vacation in Zanzibar?

Sipping coconut water on a sunbed, scent of the ocean, sand in your hair and perfect weather on a fairytale beach… Yes, I know this feeling! And guess what? Now is the perfect time to travel to the stunning and exotic island of Zanzibar, a jewel of Tanzania and turn your dream into reality. Just imagine those white sands, turquoise waters and breathtaking landscapes… You can almost feel them, can’t you?

Now that I have planted the idea of your next trip, let’s walk through how to plan it. It’s hard not to picture yourself already there, right?

🌞 Best months for visiting Zanzibar

Honestly? I would say all year round 😄

But if you want to avoid the rain and make the most of your beach time, here’s what to consider:

  • June to October mark the cool dry season, with perfect weather: sunny days, warm temperatures (25 – 29°C) and low humidity. It’s also the peak tourist season, perfect for diving, snorkeling and working on that golden tan you have been dreaming about.
  • November is still a decent month to visit Zanzibar if you want fewer crowds and lower prices, but have in mind that short rains may occur.
  • December to February, is also part of the dry season, but with higher temperatures (28 – 33°C). But if the heat doesn’t bother you, it’s still a great time for beach and water activities.

☔ Avoid if possible March to May

This is the rainy season in Zanzibar, with heavy rainfalls especially in April. Many hotels and resorts close for renovations during this time, so finding accommodation might also be tricky.

If you still choose (or have) to visit during these months, make sure to pack rubber boots, a reliable umbrella and waterproof clothes, as the roads can get muddy and the weather conditions are unpredictable.

🧳 What to pack for a Zanzibar trip?

Packing for Zanzibar means preparing for sun, sea, culture, and comfort.

Essentials include:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothes
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a sunhat
  • Water shoes (especially helpful for reef walks or rocky areas)
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Basic first aid kit
  • A power bank (trust me, you’ll want to keep your phone charged for all those stunning photos you’ll be sending to friends and family!)
  • And to stay connected during your trip, an eSIM from MobileSIM is a great option for mobile data: super cheap compared to roaming fees, quick and easy to set up, so you won’t miss a moment.

Wishing you happy and unforgettable travels!

And don’t forget to share your Zanzibar experience with us, we would love to hear your story and see the magic through your eyes. ✨
